I built my raised beds much cheaper and much more easily than I thought they would be from instructions here:
http://www.thecapecoop.com/diy-super-easy-raised-garden-bed-for-under-30/
If you have an electric screwdriver and a helper, you can get one done in a couple hours or less. And I say this as someone who had never built anything before!
Container gardening is also a super easy and great way to wet your feet if building boxes seems like a lot to start, or you have limited space. I grew a bunch of tomatoes, peppers, zucchini in those orange buckets from Home Depot when I started out a few summers ago. You can get a variety of plants there, too, if it’s too late to start what you want from seed. Just plop them in your soil! More or less :)
Also a fun practice: I like to talk to my plants like they’re friends of mine when I go out to tend to them. Tell them they’re doing great, sing songs, whatever! Let them know I care for them. We all need love, right? My “sad” plants bounce back quicker than they ever used to. Take it how you will, but studies show... :)

To piggyback off the gardening theme, those interested might want to look into natural remedies for the treatment of ailments, etc. Who knows what we may have available in the future?
There are more sources out there than I expected. Although we used it for centuries before our modern era, the practice is undervalued today and often mocked. There are many reasons for that, as we know! But the more we can help ourselves, the more we empower ourselves :)
I recently purchased this book:

There are many people who know much, much, much more about the subject, so please correct me or add what might be helpful!
