The thorny ethics of collecting genetic data (finance.yahoo.com)

It appears that scientists seek cooperation of humanity in providing access to our birth right, our individual genomes, sometimes offering a little profit and/or information to sweeten the deal.
However noble their stated intentions, there are volumes of negative actions that could derive from this possession of our DNA. Once they have it, it could be used nefariously if not by them, then by others with access to it. That is the concern.
The bottom line is control. Scientists or those they allow access to the DNA would have power over us. Our DNA could be weaponized against us. It could be gathered in data bases. Decisions based on our DNA packages could affect our progeny.
For all we know, they could be Frankenstein, or Mengela. This smacks of Big Brother. No matter what positive motivations they have, the bottom line is profit.
If my DNA must be known and altered for me to be healed with modern medicine, then I don't want it.
Between hackers and government overreach, how could they possible guarantee privacy?
How can we be sure it wouldn't be added to this?

The gathering of DNA from every ethnicity is about finding optimum traits from a wider net of possibilities, to use in future genetic manipulation. It may be their claim to want to discover cures. But it may also be used to create designer babies. Profit is the ultimate motive.
Our DNA IS OUR BIRTHRIGHT. No one has the right to exploit it, or own it, but each of us. Data rights are human rights. There can be no more personal data than what we're made of, genetically.
