Reptiliandude: That’s the idea. It’s called ‘psyching oneself up.’

The coach is in the locker room and the team is taking a beating so he pumps them up and gets them motivated in just this manner.

Players (and people having trouble with life issues) come back from a beating when inspired with confidence from temporarily looking at things in a black and white manner, excluding all shades of grey (for a short while).

This is how pep talks in the locker room work.

Could you imagine a coach psyching up a beaten down group of players and then some guy, head down, dejectedly slouching around by the toilets says, “These are just simple black and white terms, Coach...”

The whole team looks at that guy and he continues...

“I mean, this game... does it really matter? Does any of this really matter? I mean, they’re kicking our asses out there and it just seems to me that all of this is all just some sort of ‘brainwashing’ to get us to believe in ourselves even though the odds of us coming back are mathematically improbable”

“I’m not saying that it’s impossible, but in the long run, does any of this really matter? It’s not like anyone is going to remember us a hundred years from now.”

“Does life even really matter? You know, you guys, in about 7.6 billion years all of this is going to be gone anyways... aren’t there other things more important to care about than this game?”

Can you imagine that mindset being successful in any competitive field at all?

That mindset makes a person suck at life.

I’ve never encountered that sort of person in the locker room on any team effort I’ve been involved in.

That mindset just doesn’t make the cut.

I’ve been in competitive situations where I was outclassed and outweighed in what seemed on the surface to be every conceivable way, and yet I won.

And I won simply because I had more fight and determination in me.

And it embarrassed those both ‘smarter’ and more ‘successful’ than me who thoroughly doubted my resolve.

Oh, how they grumbled and sneered.

The reason that someone like that guy I described doesn’t make the cut is because his is a mindset that’s fixated on objects instead of actions.

When one encounters a problem it needs to be broken down into simple terms and assaulted in small chunks which the brain can process.

The brain requires familiar, simple black and white references to overcome that flood of information which always creates analysis paralysis and dejection in those who fear failure.

The loser mindset is one that, in its desire to demonstrate its own intelligence, fails to truly appreciate the fact that to accomplish anything bold in life requires that you bullshit yourself a little.

That’s what psyching up is.

You referred to it as brainwashing and pigeonholing for some lame reason.

You might want to re-examine those labels (even if you’re just trolling) as well as consider that there might be an even more abstruse reason as to why you’re even here on r/getmotivated in the first place.

Training one’s mindset to accomplish the seemingly impossible is why sports are so important in school.

They teach you how to smack down that inner voice that tries to take everything apart to the point where everything is meaningless and you start to lose hope.

That guy talking all that loser shit over by the toilets earlier would have been tossed out on his shit talking ass.

From ancient hunters brandishing spears against superior tooth and claw, to today’s tossing a ball around on the field against those who the pundits are claiming are ‘unbeatable’—competitive environments are no place for someone spreading dejection and defeatism under the guise of promoting ‘objective’ thought.

It’s no excuse to be clueless and to claim that you’re only trying to help.

All of us would still be in the trees if we hadn’t chosen actions over objects.

Prevention is the first recourse. Notify those who can affect policy to release the pressures so that the volcano is less of a threat.

Move away from the kill zone, and the secondary ash zone now, before it is an issue.

Collect food and water now, dried, freeze dried, seeds, cans whatever you can accumulate.

Buy rolls of plastic and duct tape to put over doors and windows to prevent ash from entry.

Consider hydroponics indoors, in garages, in bunkers.

I think maybe also gas masks... But im not sure how long they'll be effective before the razor sharp ash cuts through the filters...

What I really need is to get clear about what I must do, not what I must know, except insofar as knowledge must precede every act. What matters is to find a purpose, to see what it really is that God wills that I shall do; the crucial thing is to find a truth which is truth for me, to find the idea for which I am willing to live and die.

If it were so, as conceited sagacity, proud of not being deceived, thinks, that we should believe nothing that we cannot see with our physical eyes, then we first and foremost ought to give up believing in love. ... We can be deceived by believing what is untrue, but we certainly are also deceived by not believing what is true. ... Which deception is more dangerous?

It is the duty of the human understanding to understand that there are things which it cannot understand...

There are two ways to be fooled. One is to believe what isn't true; the other is to refuse to believe what is true.

Take a chance and you may lose. Take not a chance and you have lost already.

This is who we are. This is what we do when we recognize a threat and join together to confront it.

RESIST!
